For some people, winter is a very daunting time to be on the road. It’s wet and icy and if your car is not properly prepared then you are more likely to have an accident.
Checking your tyres is the most important check to make on your vehicle as this is the only part that has contact with the road, however, we have noticed, people do not check their tyres as much as they should.
3 important checks to make on your tyres and get them ready for winter:
1) Check the tyres in general – are in they good condition? Are they wearing a bit thin?
If your tyres are starting to look a little scuffed chances are they won’t last much longer. You start to lose tread depth and the lower the tyre tread depth the lower the tyres grip on the road.
2) Check your tyres tread depth – the simplest and easiest way to do this by using the 20p trick as the outer band is exactly 1.6mm (the legal minimum tread depth).
3) Check the pressure in your tyres – for this you’ll need a pressure gauge. The best time to check your tyres is when they are cool as this is when you will get the most accurate result. Try just before going on a journey. If they are lower than the recommended pressure intake then you know it’s time to do something about it.
If you are unsure on how to do any of these then just simply pop into our garage where our mechanics are more than happy to help.
Making sure your tyres are safe is the most important thing on a vehicle. You are preventing further damage to your car, or worse, an accident!
Or better yet, spend that extra bit of cash knowing you do not have to worry when the weather is wet and icy.
